JACARANDA CONCERT SERIES: DIARY GALLERY ELEGY

February 16, 2008

As part of Jacaranda’s concert series celebrating the music of Olivier Messiaen and the artists who influenced him, the “Diary Gallery Elegy” concert will include works by Isaac Albeniz, Modest Mussorgsky, and Peter Tchaikovsky. Pianists Eduardo Delgado & Robert Edward Thies will be performing with cellist Andrew Schulman and violinist Joel Pargman.

This concert explores how the palpable Spanish atmosphere of Iberia, a musical diary by Albeniz, and Mussorgsky’s exhilarating tour of Russian paintings left their imprint on Messiaen’s keyboard style. The intense emotions of Tchaikovsky’s farewell to Mussorgsky resonated with Messiaen’s embrace of melodic sincerity.

JACARANDA CONCERT SERIES: DOUBLE EDGE

March 22, 2008

As part of Jacaranda’s concert series celebrating the music of Olivier Messiaen and the artists who influenced him, the Double Edge concert will include works by William Bolcom and Olivier Messiaen.

Kyle Gann of The Village Voice called Double Edge “one of the century’s best piano duos…Their sonority is big, their ensemble perfect, their repertoire wild.” Bolcom’s “Frescoes” for two pianos, harpsichord and harmonium requires drama, wit, imagination and dexterity, while the monumental “Visions of Amen” by Messiaen demands intelligence, power and generosity of spirit.
