Tonight is the opening reception for the exhibit “Alex Steinweiss: Creator of the Album Cover,” which includes original album covers, paintings and collages.
In 1938, Steinweiss, as Art Director of Capital Records, had the idea of putting eye-catching graphics on album covers. By replacing the plain paper wrappers that all albums came in he revolutionized the record business and spawned a new field of illustration.
Steinweiss’s covers are still regarded as icons of the genre. He designed them as miniature posters, with eye-catching graphics, vivid colors, and creative, original typography. He was an accomplished illustrator, and he incorporated original artwork into most of his pieces. The Steinwiess style went hand in hand with the golden age of jazz, classical, and popular music.
