The Honor Fraser Gallery is hosting an opening reception for the new Ed Ruscha exhibit “Standard Stations,” a collection of work depicting the Standard gasoline station in photography, print, works on paper, painting, as well as a sketch on a post-it note.
The ordinariness of the Standard gasoline station reflects Ruscha’s interest in art that could be neutral and objective, while at the same time conveys the desolate feel and emptiness of the American West.
Ruscha’s detached recording of gas stations illustrates his interest in absence: of subject matter, of precedent, of meaning, and of the artist’s hand. The word “standard” itself connotes the suppression of individuality, and the preservation of objectivity.
The earliest work on show, “Standard, Amarillo, TX” (1962) is from a series of photographs Ruscha took on road trips between Oklahoma City and Los Angeles during the 1950’s and 1960’s.
