Composer John Cage broke new ground in 1952 when he presented 4′33″, the “silent” piece that is considered his most famous, controversial and, by his own estimate, important work. The CalArts’ Experimental Music Workshop will explore Cage’s belief that the concept and the experience of silence is one of the fundamental features of the musical experience.
The Workshop will trace the enduring impact of 4′33″ through an artistic lineage that runs from Cage, George Brecht and James Tenney to composers Antoine Beuger, Jürg Frey, and Michael Pisaro, as well as filmmaker Madison Brookshire.

Launched in 2004, the SFJAZZ Collective has quickly become one of the most exciting and acclaimed groups on the American jazz scene. The all-star jazz ensemble includes some of today’s finest jazz performers and composers — including Downbeat magazine’s “Artist of the Year” honorees, Grammy-nominated trumpeter Dave Douglas (2006) and saxophone giant Joe Lovano (2001).
Filled with electrifying dance performances, Benson Lee’s documentary, “Planet B-Boy,” is set in the international world of B-boying - the urban dance more commonly known as “breakdancing.” Weaving between the stories of B-boys in Osaka, Paris and Las Vegas, Lee traces their paths to the world champion B-boy competition.
