I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE

In a retelling of Charlotte Bronte’s “Jane Eyre,” legendary horror producer Val Lewton teams up with Jacques Tourneur (“Cat People”) in the 1943 film “I Walked with a Zombie.” A Canadian nurse is hired to take care of the lifeless wife of a plantation owner. Resorting to voodoo in order to find a cure, she soon realizes the terrifying truth about her situation. RKO Radio Pictures, 69 mins.

ANNE-SOPHIE MUTTER IN RECITAL

Multiple Grammy winner and revered violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter returns to the Walt Disney Concert Hall as part of the LA Philharmonic Association’s Colburn Celebrity Recital series. Appearing with her is pianist Lambert Orkis, in his Walt Disney Concert Hall debut, for a program of Brahms Violin Sonatas that includes No. 2 in A major, Op. 100, No. 1 in G major, Op. 78 and No. 3 in D minor, Op. 108.

Mutter and Orkis have frequently recorded together for Deutsche Grammophon, and won a Grammy for “Best Chamber Music Performance” for the Beethoven piano and violin sonatas, and a 2006 “Choc de l’année” award for the Mozart piano and violin sonatas audio recording.

ANOTHER WORLD LIES BEYOND: VISUAL ALLUSIONS IN THE CHINESE GARDEN

An inscription inside the entrance gates to the Huntington’s Garden of Flowing Fragrance reads “another world lies beyond.” The words allude to a well-known tale in Chinese literature about a hidden utopian land. Louise Yuhas, professor of art history and Asian studies at Occidental College, will discuss the many kinds of “other worlds” that are evoked in traditional Chinese gardens.
