CHADO TEA ROOM                        OPENING AT JANM

“No pleasure is simpler, no luxury cheaper, no consciousness-altering substance more benign,” remarks James Norwood Pratt, tea specialist and author of the “New Tea Lover’s Treasury.” To celebrate the grand opening of the Chado Tea Room at the Japanese American National Museum, join Pratt for a presentation on tea lore followed by a full afternoon tea.

In addition to writing the “New Tea Lover’s Treasury,” Pratt has been Honorary Director of the first traditional Chinese teahouse in America, instrumental in creating the American Premium Tea Institute and editor-in-chief of the magazine Tea Trade.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF                   RADIO WORKSHOP

“The Thrilling Adventure & Supernatural Suspense Hour” team brings the Golden Age of radio to kids at a mock broadcast workshop. Students will learn how to write their own radio plays with memorable characters, witty dialogue, music and sound effects. At the end of the afternoon, genre-appropriate actors and a sound effects artist will perform all of the plays live.

A CRASH COURSE IN TEA

The Algabar tea shop will be offering a “Crash Course on Tea” taught by certified tea expert Gail Baral. Using the traditional tools of a tea master - the cupping bowl and mug - participants will taste and evaluate various teas, including white, green, oolong, and black. Learn about the origin and production of teas as well as the best way to prepare and serve them at home.

TWO UNRELATED PLAYS BY DAVID MAMET

CLOSING TODAY: Directed by Neil Pepe, The Center Theatre Group presents two unrelated one-acts by David Mamet. The world premiere of Mamet’s 2008 “Keep Your Pantheon,” is a rousing farce that follows the fortunes and misfortunes of an acting troupe in ancient Rome. The 1971 classic, “The Duck Variations,” is a sly-meditation on the meaning of life between two elderly men watching ducks.

LA VIDA LOWRIDER: CRUISING THE CITY OF ANGELS

CLOSING TODAY: Legendary LA lowriders, cars with candy paint jobs that are customized to ride low to the ground, are on view at “La Vida Lowrider: Cruising the City of Angels.” Whether it is the “Gypsy Rose,” adorned with 150 painted roses, or the hard-to-see “Dressed to Kill,” these lowriders are symbols of the city’s complex artistic and cultural heritage.
