YOKO ONO’S WISH TREE PASADENA INSTALLATION

September 24, 2008

Make a wish, write it on a piece of paper and tie it to the branch of a Wish Tree in Yoko Ono’s participatory installation in Pasadena. Ono, the avant-garde artist and widow of John Lennon, attached wishes to trees in temple courtyards as a child in Japan. Now the act of wishing, which she describes as a “collective prayer,” is part of an ongoing tribute to her late husband. All of the wishes from the current installation will be saved and later buried at Ono’s public art project, the Imagine Peace Tower, in Reykjavík, Iceland.

August 3, 2008

“Godzilla,” “Mothra” and “King Ghidorah” flattened megalopolises for over fifty years during the golden age of Japanese sci-fi films. The new documentary “Bringing Godzilla Down to Size” shows how these monsters were created and animated using handmade F/X techniques. Directed by Norman England, the film takes us behind the scenes of miniature destruction through interviews with special-effects artists, monster stand-ins, filmmakers and legendary sci-fi actors Akira Takarada, Haruo Nakajima and Hiroshi Koizumi. 2008, Classic Media, 68 min.

As part of the Egyptian’s Giant Monster Night, “Bringing Godzilla Down to Size” will be followed by screenings of “War of the Gargantuas” (1966) and “Mothra” (1961).
