Stirring the imagination unlike any other city in the US, LA has inspired photographers since the 1860’s to explore this spacious landscape filled with raw and compelling complexities. The Huntington’s exhibit “This Side of Paradise: Body and Landscape in LA Photographs” presents work by photographers who examined both the human and geographic terrain, which resulted in helping an elusive LA find its visual identity.
Responding to the ambient light, the cities unique spatial configurations and the glamour of early Hollywood films, a generation of photographers, led by key figures such as Imogen Cunningham, Ernest Pratt and Edward Weston, pushed LA imagery in new directions,
“This Side of Paradise” is drawn from The Huntington’s extensive photographic archives as well as other institutions, collectors and artists. Henry E. Huntington believed strongly that LA was the “city of the future.”
